North Indians vs South Indians

Foremost, India is the land of Dravidians and Aryans before we get into its religious history. Any organization/company/corporate we go to, there is always an element of differentiation. Why exactly is this divide? He is a South Indian, she is a North Indian. Oh! he eats rice only, She can't live without a roti.

The South Indians:  A descent of the ancient Dravidians. The most Dravidian speakers today are the Telugus, Tamils, Kannadigas, Malayalis, Tulus and Gonds. In a nutshell South Indians are generally academic driven, discplined, humble, pious, sublte natured people. Being a disciplined academician the South Indians do not always question a thought/belief/opinion. Their instinctual is to go by the rule of the thumb. A South Indian would thrive to memorize a multiplication table (less formally a times table) upto 20*20. South Indians take pride in memorizing. Hence, their natural instinct is trained towards being more analytical rather than contradiction.

Some of the famous South Indians are :
  • C.V. Raman (Mathematician)
  • Srinivasa Ramanujam (Mathematician)
  • Abdul Kalam (Scientist, Former-President)
  • P.V.Narasimha Rao (Former Prime Minister)
  • A.R.Rahman (Musician)
In this era of Information Age, where most of the youth's jobs are focused around Information Technology. On a casual tea/cigarette break from work a bunch of youth debate or get lost in the thought, "Why Southies don't occupy Management positions". South Indians are off Mathematician nature and hesitant to occupy positions which would involve them to walk away from Code/Solutions/Numbers.

Southies are often flocked on their pronounciation stress on the alphabets such as "Yum" for M, "Yen" for N, etc. The root reason behind this pronounciation stress is because of their mother tongue linguistics. In the languages such as Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, these alphabets are stressed. The Cosmo Dravidians are aware about this stress and have focused to neutralize it.

Most flocked/rumored South Indian tales, that they are -

  • Less fashionable
  • Long named (such as Venkata Raghava Srinivasa Narasimha that would translate into V.R.S Narasimha, Villupuram Chinnaih Pillai Ganesan (Sivaji Ganesan) ). Sticking your neck out a name like this would hint at the persons place of origin and ancestral line. In order to make these long names "India Neutral", South celebs would monogram their pedigree like names into NTR, MGR, CBN, YSR, ANR etc.
  • Eat with their hands all the time. South Indians love to liquidate their morsel of rice with Curry, Sambar, Dhal, Yogurt, etc.
  • Do not mix with anyone else. A Malayalee would swim through rivers to find another Malayalee to share a fish, a Telugu would crush through red-chillies to find another Telugu for sharing his pickle, A Tamil would grind through beans to find another Tamil for coffee-chat, A Kannadiga would crush through grains to find company of another Kannadiga over a box of Raagi balls.
The 1970s, 80s - Back in the 70s, 80s during the massive national migration based on demand for jobs, a lot of South Indians moved into metropolitan cities. Occupying positions of  respectable skills such as Accountants, Engineers, Foreman etc.  This gave the North an exposure of the South culture for the first time.

It was forbidden to marry a Tamil Iyer/Iyengar since they would not eat in someone else's plate and drink out of someone else's glass. The movie, "Ek Dujhe Ke Liye" broke these boundaries and encouraged the then youth to think sensibly. In Mumbai, Dadar (A South Indian occupied suburb of then Bombay),  South Indian boys would mingle with the Marathis, Punjabis, etc in the summer holidays. The Marathis, North Indian boys would be offered South Indian delicacies such as Idli, Sambar, Vada, etc at their friends home. These chronicles brought the North Indian parents and South Indian parents together for the first time and understand each others culture.

The North Indians:
Descendants of the ancient regions of Panchala, Kuru, Kosala, Sindhu, Banas. People of Indo-Iranian languages. In Indians the Aryans or the North Indians are those sect of people who speak Punjabi, Assamese, Gujurati, Sindhi, Marathi, Kashmiri, Bengali, Oriya, UP, Bihari, etc.  Typically, North Indians are less-dad fearing and mom-fearing while growing up. It reverses once over post-youth. The South Indians are typically dad-fearing, get a slap back in the face for every punchline towards their parents. The North Indians mostly have a contradictorial approach towards a theory. This mostly comes from their business background. In order to trade successfully, you need to question.

Some of the famous North Indian Entrepreneurs are :

  • The Ambanis, The Tatas, The Birlas, etc
  • Sabeer Bhatia (Hotmail)
  • Vinod Khosla (Sun Microsystems)
  • Amar Bose (Bose Consumer Electronics)
  • Gaurav Dhillon (Informatica)
Stereotypical - North Indians look down upon South Indians because of their darker skin. A fair skinned South Indian is usually questioned in surprise, "What you are South Indian, you are so fair?".   South Indians look down upon North Indians because of their less-academic background. North Indians are mostly wheat-eaters, believe that every Indian should speak Hindi, typical risk-taking, non-law abiding youth (unlike the South Indians), mong for a jazzy lifestyle, cosmo-fashion lovers, chooses the business/Armed forces as a livelyhood.

Typically, North Indians have a flair for business and easily occupy good management positions later in their careers. In the Information Age, most of the Management Consultant, Sr. Manager, Associate Partner, Director jobs are easily occupied by the North Indians. A South Indian believes that it requires some good technical experience to satisfy the needs of those job profiles. This theory exists since the North Indian is adept in making the business run successfully and the South Indian restricts himself to his technical domain.

Most flocked/rumored North Indian tales, that they are -
  • Fair skinned. Not mostly at all! The Biharis, Bengalis, UPites,Gujaratis  are pre-dominantly brown or dark.
  • Do not take regular showers.
  • Thinks it is fashionable to speak English to impress a South Indian
  • Always rythmic in words such as Pizza/Vizza, Picture/Victure, Khanna/Vanna, Chai/Vai, Shaadi/Vaadi, Teri/Meri.
  • Chews Paan/Tobacco and spits red slush all over the walls.
  • Addresses all South Indians as a "Madrasi".
  • Uses words/phrases such as "Sirji" to his seniors, "God willing" for the phrase 'touch-wood', "By God" for the phrase 'I swear'.
No matter which nation you go, humans always try to find differences not just between different countries but also their own people based on - north, south, stereotypes, culture, festivals, names, etc.
